Health Equity Hackathon

A few months after completing my M.S. Analytics, my buddy, Patrick Ly, and I decided to participate in a few local hackathons. He was in the middle of a career change and boot camp so this was a great way for us to continue learning and testing our abilities. We found the Health Equity Hackathon which focused on “creating data-driven solutions for the underserved healthcare population.” It was a weekend long event and seeing so many people willing to dedicate a beautiful fall Houston weekend to help the community was extremely inspiring.

Patrick and I had no experience in the healthcare field and we did not know about the 2-1-1 system in Houston. We quickly learned about the essential services that United Way provided to the underserved communities and the impact the program has. The program collects a lot of data on the services it provides but it did not have a way to analyze it to gain insights that could help improve the program. Our solution was to provide a data visualization prototype using Tableau that quickly displays relevant information that can be analyzed. We wanted to identify the most successful and least successful services, trends of needs met, and locations that need attention.

Our final presentation is in the link below. We did not publish the dashboard to Tableau Public because the dataset was proprietary.

Health Equity Presentation

Our findings included:

  • Overall, 95% of needs were met from 2-1-1 calls serviced
  • Mental health and substance abuse services were the most successful and consistent in providing assistance
  • Disaster and Individual / Family Life services were the least successful and consistent in providing assistance since seasonal events impact services like hurricane season for disaster and holidays for family life services
  • Pair the data with domain knowledge to dive into root causes of unmet needs and improve offerings for those services
